The founder

Kevin Madison

A photograph of Kevin Madison goes here, 4:5.

He was the 4.0 student and the failing student in the same semester, at the same school, depending on what each course happened to be offering him.

Not in sequence. At the same time. One course was pitched at something near the way he already thought, and he was excellent in it. Another was pitched at something else, and he was not. The work did not change. The person doing it did not change. What changed was whether the explanation in front of him had been written for anybody in particular.

That simultaneity is the whole idea, and it is the reason this company exists rather than a tutoring service. A student is not one thing. Their relationship to any given system is not fixed, and it is not a property of the student. It is a property of the fit, which means it is a variable somebody chose, and a variable somebody chose is a variable somebody can choose differently.

The second thing that built this was watching somebody else be on the wrong side of the same gap for a decade. A stylist, doing lanthionization chemistry with her hands: the actual reaction, controlled by feel, every working day for ten years, and never once being told that is what it was called. She was not failing to understand chemistry. She was doing chemistry. Nobody had ever handed her the sentence that would have let her know it.

There is no shortage of people in that position. There is a shortage of systems willing to meet them where the knowledge already is, rather than at the vocabulary they were never given. Most educational software is built to deliver a fixed explanation efficiently. Almost none of it is built to notice that the explanation is the part that should move.

He is studying to become a forensic neuroclinical psychiatrist, the discipline that sits where the brain, behaviour and the consequences of both are examined under conditions that demand evidence rather than intuition. It is the same question from the other end: what is actually happening in a person, as opposed to what a system has decided is happening in them. A system that infers disengagement from a slow response is making a clinical claim without a clinician, without evidence, and without telling anybody it has done so.

He built this in the gap. Not after finishing, not with a team, not on a runway, in the time between the parts of a life that were already spoken for. That is the whole provenance, and it is stated plainly here because a founding story is a claim like any other and this one can be checked against the shipping product: the software is free, it is finished, and it is on this site.
